To celebrate her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Sheryl Crow has released an album she defines as “a compilation of new songs.” “I thought, OK, I’m not going to make a conventional album, thinking about the beginning, middle, and end,’” she explains. The almost impulsive quality in the conception of The Evolution resonates with the subject matter of the songs, which are catalysts to the singer’s anger. Anger that is symbolized by the image of an “Alarm Clock” sounding off – clearly, Sheryl Crow, now in her sixties, isn’t the type who likes being woken up from a sweet dream. In “Do It Again,” she calls out the fakeness of others while praising her own inner strength. The album was produced by Mike Elizondo, known for his productions for Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Nelly Furtado. “He brought a fresh approach and illustrated the songs in such a cinematic way” Crow describes. This cinematic touch is particularly strong on the track “Evolution,” which is a bit reminiscent of “Tomorrow Never Dies,” the James Bond theme song that she composed in 1997. In the song, Sheryl Crow wonders how her career might change in the age of artificial intelligence. “Turned on the radio and there it was / A song that sounded like something I wrote.” Sheryl Crow was indeed immortalized into the Pantheon of rock in 2023, and still on all fronts, she’s more vibrant and alive than ever. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
