Noora Louhimo's voice is best known as that of the Helsinki-based heavy metal band Battle Beast. After the release of the album More Hollywood Endings in 2019, Noora Louhimo wanted to embark on a more personal adventure, signing off on her first solo album under the name of Noora Louhimo Experience - a nod to Jimi Hendrix. Alongside the pugnacity and sometimes heavy metal-like guitars that she usually uses, there is a strong dose of psychedelia added on this release. Upon listening to the tracks, the delirium of the Rocky Horror Picture Show or Meat Loaf's albums are likely to spring to mind. Noora Louhimo doesn't hold back on anything and, for better or for worse, a certain level of kitschiness is never far too away. As for her voice, her husky tone is sometimes reminiscent of Bonnie Tyler.
Eternal Wheel of Time and Space is a delirious space travel fantasy, flirting, in musical terms, with all styles, even often with mainstream rock and pop. After the first track’s floods of guitar, Noora switches focus to rock and heavy metal with the aptly named “Valkyrie”. She then melts her heavy armour with a collection of rock ballads: “All These Yesterdays”, “Pieces Of Your Love”, “New You” (super eighties).
A transition takes place on the sixth track, opening up the rest of the album on which she mixes other musical styles, from blues to funk. A good example of this is “Sinner On The Floor”, a sort of Prince pastiche; unbridled funk with ferocious guitars. Then the marshmallow atmosphere returns with another ballad, a slow song entitled “If I Was Your Woman”, before Louhimo pays tribute to one of her great inspirations, Janis Joplin, with a very rock'n'roll cover of Piece of My Heart.
Eternal Wheel of Time and Space is far from quiet and soothing, but it blows a wind of freedom and diversity that is a welcome surprise. © Yan Céh/Qobuz
