The choral pieces on this CD -- anthems, hymns, odes, and service music -- support the proposition that Elgar was essentially a miniaturist who breaks the longer texts into shorter individual sections, each with its own character, rather than creating extended organic structures. Even his larger works, such as Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius, are made up of relatively short building blocks. It's perhaps this quality of fragmentation that has kept his choral music on the fringes of the English cathedral choir repertoire, while lesser composers such as Stanford and Howells are firmly established in that tradition. The shorter works, such as O salutaris hostia and Ave verum, have the most satisfying structural integrity. Each of these pieces contains many lovely moments, and they are successful in their liturgical function of providing music to support various aspects of the worship of the church. The Westminster Abbey Choir, conducted by James O'Donnell, is matchless in this repertoire. The choir of men and boys sings with terrific intonation and a blend that is unforced and pure. They project the music with an appealing simplicity and directness and with none of the affectation that can easily creep into performances of music of this era. Organist Robert Quinney accompanies the singers very ably and self-effacingly. Hyperion's sound is gorgeous and clean and pure, with just enough resonance to create the sense of grandeur for which this music was written.
