The music of Oxford-based British composer Edmund Finnis (b. 1984) will be new to many, and this NMC release is in the nature of a sampler, with several different ensembles performing. Finnis' music is sparse but not minimalist, always in motion but made up of glassy, hypnotic surfaces. His language can be inflected toward representations of nature (the title work is inspired by a poem about wind) or toward more abstract patterns, but a common personality is clear throughout. The seven-movement Parallel Colour, performed here by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, exploits the possibilities of two groups of instruments and offers the listener the chance to sample Finnis' structural thinking in small chunks. Try the sparkling fifth movement, and you will want to hear more. Finnis' work is not tonally organized, but it is going to have considerable audience appeal: these works are instrumental showpieces. The hushed, gracefully moving The Air, Turning will certainly gain in live performances (and it is to be hoped that the recording stimulates some of these). You might wonder what the Vienna Philharmonic strings could do with it, but the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Ilan Volkov is more than adequate. Highly recommended for those interested in new British music.
