The unfortunate victim of an impromptu stage invasion during his performance at the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest, Madrid-born singer/actor Daniel Diges remained impressively unfazed as a notorious prankster joined the lineup of dancers before being escorted off by security. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, his self-titled debut album doesn't conjure up anything as memorable as his admirable cool, calm, and collected "the show must go on" demeanor. While the Gallic-tinged circus-style waltz of his 15th placed Spanish entry, "Algo Pequeñito" (also included here in a swing jazz version), was undoubtedly a refreshing antidote to the schlager pop anthems and key-change ballads on the night, it doesn't quite possess the same charm during the cold light of day. Nevertheless, the jaunty jazz-pop sound is certainly where Diges' strengths lie, as the bossa nova-tinged "Quédate Conmigo," the orchestral lounge-pop of "Te Dejé Marchar," and the Spanish-language interpretations of Michael Bublé's "Everything" ("Te Quiero Así") and Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" ("Eres Perfecta Para Mí") are certainly more convincing than his forays into more conventional pop territory. "Si No Miras No Lo Ves" is a plodding slice of '70s dad-rock, Oscar Gomez's flat production on a cover of "Angels" turns the Robbie Williams classic into a dated cruise ship cabaret number, and the overblown and forgettable piano-led ballads "Alejandra" and "Todo Me Sabe a Ti" suggest that Diges found it difficult to leave his musical theater background fully behind. Indeed, Diges' first attempt at mainstream pop might not be a "close after one night" car crash but it's no crowd-pleasing showstopper either, meaning it's highly unlikely to overshadow that gate-crashing Eurovision moment.
