The repertoire of the pope of Bossa Nova, Tom Jobim, is one of the most widely-sung in the world. He has become so well-known that you might be forgiven for wondering if he's not getting a bit passé. But this new effort quickly allays any such fears, because Carminho kicks off her new collection with A Felicidade, one of the Brazilian master's most famous songs. The young Portuguese singer manages to breath the easy sensuality of bossa nova and the elegance, verging on gravity, of fado, rendering the hymn all the more passionate. She is accompanied in these high-flown re-readings by musicians who are more than equal to these works. We find Daniel and Paulo Jobim, Tom's two sons, on piano and guitar; Jacques Morelenbaum on the cello and Paulinho Bragan on drums, all members of Banda Nova, Jobim's final orchestra. The Fadist's talent has also attracted the legendary Marisa Monte, Maria Bethania and Chico Buarque, to play alongside. This record is a success which proves the timeless quality of Jobim's songs, and Carminho' broad and subtle expressiveness. © BM/Qobuz
