For his fifth album, Chazwick Bradley "Chaz" Bundick a.k.a. Toro Y Moi basically opted for genuine and unadulterated hedonism. Hedonism that this prince of chillwave (along with Washed Out and Neon Indian) has been spreading with great talent since 2010. Relying on smooth funk sonorities straight out of the 80s (an atmosphere akin to Michael Mann’s first films), synth pop sounds and a throbbing, even chloroformed rhythm, he confides being influenced by Frank Ocean, Daft Punk, Oneohtrix Point Never and Travis Scott among others. Musical references can be felt here and there, but don’t stand out, as Bundick successfully preserves the uniqueness of both his voice and style. All in all Boo Boo deserves credit for pushing the chillwave of this musician from Columbia, South Carolina, towards a more soul and dreamlike direction. Listen to it with headphones, lying down on a fine sandy beach: bubble-bath effect guaranteed! © MZ/Qobuz
