Best Moves brings together the strongest singles from Chris de Burgh's first five albums, making for a short but pleasant collection of early material. Not all the tracks are ballads though, and the album is greatly benefited by the eerie "Spanish Train" and the whimsical air of "Patricia the Stripper." A live version of "Broken Wings" appears here as well, with its album version coming from 1977's At the End of a Perfect Day. With his more graceful work, songs like "Every Drop of Rain," "Satin Green Shutters," and "Lonely Sky" showcase his talent for singing elegant ballads that glisten with de Burgh's rural feel. "A Spaceman Came Travelling" is one of his more appealing story-type songs that is benefited by its hymn-like chorus. By far, the greatest attribute of Best Moves is the addition of the nine-minute "Crusader" from the album of the same name. Not found on The Very Best of Chris de Burgh, one of the more accessible compilations from this artist, its wonderful tempo change and narrative balance out all the other ballads on this 11-song set. As the songs on this collection prove, de Burgh's most enjoyable material came from early in his career. Best Moves offers an admirable assortment of both love songs and intricately woven tales. Although much of his material that followed this compilation should not be disregarded, this album does make for a brief but delightful listen.
