Ever since their first album Midnight Oil released in 1978, the Australians have been leaving their mark in more than one way. Well-known for their environmental commitments, their hatred for nuclear energy and love for peaceful actions, Peter Garrett’s gang’s story is both unusual and fascinating, very much like their compositions. Armistice Day: Live at the Domain, Sydney recounts their 2017 tour. It’s a double album that features some of their greatest hits like Redneck Wonderland, US Forces, and of course Beds Are Burning. In pure 80’s pop rock style, here are 26 titles for a two-hour-long militant concert. In this show political questions, our relationship with freedom and the refugee crisis take centre stage. Peter Garrett has quite a pedigree: as an ex-member of the Australian Labor Party, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts between 2007 and 2010, and President of the Australian Conservation Foundation for 10 years, the mind behind Midnight Oil has always had revolutionary blood flowing through his veins! Synthesisers and frenzied harmonica on Blue Sky Mine, futuristic vibes on Don’t Wanna Be The One: Midnight Oil give off a rather raw image that hasn’t settled down one bit! Their rock style borrows from pop and blues music, with raspy voices at times, and helps us rediscover some wonderful gems, like their 1981 album Place Without a Postcard. © Anna Coluthe /Qobuz
