Omar Sosa, the prolific Cuban pianist and sound adventurer, has released a new album with an unexpected new collaboration. After exchanging rich emotions with the Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu, kora player Seckou Keita or Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, Omar Sosa has teamed up with his compatriot Yilian Canizares, a violinist and singer. Accompanied by percussionist Inor Sotolongo, the two performers return to their deepest roots – those of their true identities, not that which is most characteristic of their country. It’s not a question of making people dance, but instead giving them the chance to listen, reflect and dream. Being followers of a syncretic spiritualism from Santeria origin, the two Cubans dedicated this album to Oshun, goddess of love and mistress of the river. The water (Duo de Aguas) is a symbol of life, where they cry for the cruelty caused by man and pollution, but also evoke the nostalgia that often separates the two friends from their country. But their roots aren’t the only things they have in common: Omar Sosa and Yilian Canizares are also musicians who have allowed their music to evolve through the blue notes of jazz. We’re talking about free jazz here, mixed with the two protagonists’ favourite instruments to which they add digital programming and samples. Fine improvisers and outstanding technicians, their music offers a range of sensations from meditation to dizzying whirlwinds. They charm the listener and lead them to new horizons where anything seems possible. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
