And then there was one! With Abysmal Thoughts, Jonny Pierce is the sole mover of this Brooklyn group which started in 2008 as a quartet. Alone, at every level. His personal and professional splits - with his partner, and with his old office colleagues - gave Pierce enough cathartic fuel to make a record as therapy. On the face of things, the jovial, lighthearted pop of The Drums is the perfect counterweight to this sombre personal situation. A little like the Smiths, a great influence on Pierce. And in that vein, Abysmal Thoughts and its interlaced, keening guitars, represents real pop perfection. © MD/Qobuz
