The work that shares its title with the album, A Walk With Ivor Gurney by Judith Bingham (born in 1952) is a world premiere recording, while the rest of this very British programme revolves around Vaughan Williams, Herbert Howells and, of course, Gurney. Following the magical Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Vaughan Williams that opens the album, we quickly find ourselves in Gurney's dark and thoughtful world. It seems that he suffered throughout his (short) life from manic-depressive disorder, to such an extent that he spent his last fifteen years in a psychiatric institute, without composing any more music. A psychoanalyst would probably pick up on the warning signs in these superb arrangements, but for the average listener, they are quite simply wonderful works, which are unfortunately rarely heard. The Songs, orchestrated by Howells and Finzi, are sung by the sumptuous Sarah Connolly and it is once again with Vaughan Williams, who was also Gurney's teacher, that this beautiful album by the Tenebrae ensemble and the Aurora Orchestra closes. The extraordinary Oxford Elegy is definitely a highlight of the record. Composed for choir, strings and a narrator (Simon Callow, in this case), here we find twenty-two minutes of heavenly beauty. © SM/Qobuz
