RUSSELL!

RUSSELL! seemed like an out-of-nowhere viral sensation when his 2020 single “SCARLETT’S WEEKEND” amassed millions of streams, but the smooth, guitar-driven R&B track was actually his latest sonic evolution in a career that had spanned nearly a decade up to that point. The Canadian singer began his career as a rapper before finding a new niche as a sensitive, nostalgic crooner. Russell Gilbert Llantino was born in Mississauga, Ontario in 1993, and raised in nearby Brampton. He spent the first part of his career in the late 2000s and early 2010s rapping under the name D-Pryde. Though he earned some attention at home, opening for J. Cole and releasing the EP Canal & Richvale in 2013, Russell's promising career was sidelined by conflicts with his label BMG and the sudden passing of his mother. He re-emerged in 2017 under the name Pryde, this time splitting the difference between rapid-fire verses, trap beats, and emotive vocal ballads. Albums like Loverboy (2017) and LOVELY. (2019), and songs like “Things to Do” and “Emily OG,” amassed streams in the millions, and by 2020’s boy lonely, Pryde and RUSSELL! were nearly interchangeable. One-off singles “SCARLETT’S WEEKEND” (2020), “FMU” (2021), and “Lindsay’s Freestyle” (2021) were among the first to be released by RUSSELL! and enlarged his audience under that name, as did covers of Wham!'s “Last Christmas” (2023) and Tamia's “Officially Missing You” (2024). The 2024 single “Lady” teased Dearly Loved, his first full-length as RUSSELL!
