Michaël Levinas

Composer and pianist Michaël Levinas divides his career between his passion for Baroque interpretations and contemporary composition. A two-headed career for an artist at the heart of his times. Despite a career as a contemporary composer, he is renowned for his interpretations of classical repertoire such as Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and his complete Beethoven sonatas. A pupil of Messiaen, he founded the contemporary ensemble l'Itinéraire with Tristan Murail, Roger Tessier and Gérard Grisey. Michaël Levinas first came to public attention in 1986 with La conférence des oiseaux and in 2003 with Etudes pour piano, which parallels his compositions with those of György Ligeti. He has also devoted himself to composing operas such as Go-gol, based on short stories by Gogol, and La métamorphose, based on Kafka.
