Tonight is een conceptalbum over een losbandige avond uit en de ochtend erna. Franz Ferdinand hebben hard geprobeerd om hierop bewust met hun vorige muziekstijl te breken. De hoekige post-punk gitaren worden terug geschaald ten gunste van beats, bas, en heel veel keyboards. Dit alles wordt tentoongesteld op de verslavende single “Ulysses.” Kleine verfijningen van het Franz Ferdinand-geluid zijn de stop-start ritmes op “Turn It On” en de DFA-achtige percussie en gruizige synths op “Can’t Stop Feeling”. Een aantal nummers overstijgt de pasvormen, zoals de onberouwvolle, pientere swagger van “No You Girls” en de manier waarop de akoestische afsluiter “Katherine Kiss Me” de rauwe nachtgevoels van “No You Girls” transformeert naar geflirt overdag
