Het album Third kan niet beoordeeld worden op fragmenten van 30-seconden en moet eigenlijk niet versnipperd (shuffle) gehoord worden. Het vereist aandacht en inspanning van de luisteraar, het tart de beschrijvingen van kunstige pop op één onderdeel na: het biedt muziek die echt is en ongekend origineel. Wat Portishead onderscheidt, is dat ze menselijke muziek maken. Dat is niet uitsluitend te danken aan de stem van Beth Gibbons, die toegang geeft tot de duisternis, maar waarmee je niet de enige blik krijgt in het diepe innerlijk. Het perfectionisme van Barrow en Utley heeft ervoor gezorgd dat dit album heel natuurlijk klinkt, in tegenstelling tot moderne opnames waar elk geluid gemanipuleerd is tot op het onnatuurlijke af.
