Het uit Atlanta afkomstige Mastodon beklom de metal ladder op de ouderwetse manier. Ze namen die blauwdruk voor succes over van Metallica. De band wist tot de verbeelding te spreken met een reeks albums die potent in hun heftigheid en meedogenloos in hun experimentatiedrang waren. Crack the Skye rond de serie rondom de vier elementen af door op “ether” te focussen, en is tegelijkertijd een verhaal over het tsaristische Rusland van weleer. De progelementen die hun weg vonden in de sound van Blood Mountain zijn hier nog verder uitgewerkt, aangevoerd door het furieuze, technische drumwerk van Bränn Dailor. Het knetterende “Divinations” volgt na het contemplatieve, ingehouden “Oblivion”, met furieuze thrash riffs en behept duellerend fretwerk. Op “Quintessence” horen we glinsterende gitaar arpeggio’s over Dailor’s actieve drums. Een dergelijk volwassen en avontuurlijk metal album als dit zullen we waarschijnlijk lange tijd niet te horen krijgen.
