Although the Doors' music is part of a deeply bluesy tradition, it is all the more astonishing how inimitable their sound is. Ray Manzarek, John Densmore, Jim Morrison and Robby Krieger formed a mystical, powerful yet balanced band, like an alignment of planets, even if one of those planets shone brighter than the others... From the most delicate ...

About Playlist

Although the Doors' music is part of a deeply bluesy tradition, it is all the more astonishing how inimitable their sound is.

Ray Manzarek, John Densmore, Jim Morrison and Robby Krieger formed a mystical, powerful yet balanced band, like an alignment of planets, even if one of those planets shone brighter than the others... From the most delicate ballads to the most feverish rock celebrations, the first six Doors albums are the marvellous backdrop that still give so much depth to Morrison's poetry and sparkle to his legend.

The Doors, Jim Morrison’s Orchestra

by Smaël Bouaici

Fifty years ago, on 3 July 1971, Jim Morrison died mysteriously in a Parisian bathtub, survived by his three partners: Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore, who had worked tirelessly for six years to translate his dreams into music.

Back to the blues

Nevertheless, aware of the discontent, the band decided to return to blues on the next album, Morrison Hotel (1970). "For us, it was going back to basics and just having fun", Krieger said later of Roadhouse Blues. "I was always proud of that song, because as simple as it is, it’s not just another blues. That one little lick makes it a song, and I think that sums up the genius of The Doors. I think that song stands up really well as an example of what made us a great band. And the session was really cool—one of my fondest memories of the band. We cut the tune live, with John Sebastian playing harp and Lonnie Mack playing bass. He came up with that fantastic bass line." Meanwhile, Jim Morrison was putting away as much alcohol as he could lay his hands on, even beating up his girlfriend Pamela Courson for finishing a bottle in order to keep him from drinking it. Sound engineer Bruce Botnik broke up the fight, and later saw the couple leaving arm in arm, as if nothing had happened.

The same Bruce Botnick would co-produce the next album, L. A. Woman. By then, The Doors were rid of their manic producer Paul Rothchild. He had decided to jump ship while listening to the first demos from the new album, disparaging Riders on the Storm in particular as "cocktail music”. After a disastrous concert in New Orleans, at which Jim found himself unable to sing, the Californians settled down over Christmas in a small building on Santa Monica Boulevard, in a space they nicknamed The "Doors' Workshop", where they rehearsed. They brought in Leon Russell's guitarist, Marc Benno, and Jerry Scheff, who played bass for Elvis Presley. This was a treat for Jim, who was a fan of the King. The Doors frontman was much more comfortable once he was released from the pressurised atmosphere of a professional studio: according to Botnick he was drinking much less over the six days they spent recording.

In his autobiography, John Densmore described this release as simple and raw, an echo of their first album. In these cramped quarters, Jim Morrison set up a vocal booth in the toilets, and used his stage mic, a gilded Electrovoice 676-G. The track L. A. Woman was recorded over two days, with a final live take on which Jim more or less made up the lyrics on the spot. "We just started playing, and it came together as if by magic... I can remember Jim sitting in the bathroom with the mic singing and all of us just having a great time", recalls Krieger. "I think we came up with something so loose because there was no pressure."

The album was sent for mixing and in March, Jim took off to meet Pamela in Paris, get his head out of the industry, and possibly get over his addictions... But then there came that fateful night at the Rock'n'Roll Circus. He died on 3 July 1971, less than three months after L. A. Woman came out, leaving the other three Doors to think about what might have been. “It would have been so great if we’d just had a guy like Sting, Robby Krieger said. “You know, a normal guy who’s extremely talented, too. Someone who didn’t have to be on the verge of life and death every second of his life.”
