Troy Miller

b. c. 1975, England. Starting on drums in early childhood, Miller played in band formed by family members and also was heard in church. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and while still in his teens was a finalist in the BBC’s Young Musician Of The Year contest. Miller, who also plays piano, graduated in 1999, and also took private tuition from Ralph Peterson. He has performed with many distinguished jazz and fusion musicians, including Roy Ayers (touring with him internationally), Guy Barker, Gary Bartz, Don Blackman, Jocelyn Brown, Kyle Eastwood, Julian Joseph, Soweto Kinch (appearing on two albums), Mica Paris. Marcus Printup, Eric Revus, Jason Rebello and Jean Toussaint appeared on Miller’s debut release as leader. Miller’s music ranges widely and he has worked with singers such as Xantoné Blacq, Eska Mtungwazi and Anna Omak, as well as writing for a string section of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra that can be heard on 40 Days. He also plays with Damon Brown and saxophonist Ed Jones in their band, Killer Shrimp. In addition to performing and composing, Miller has returned regularly to the Guildhall School as a teacher. (NB: The Honolulu-based rock band, Chokebore, includes singer-guitarist Troy Bruno Balthazar who sometimes uses the name Troy Miller.)
