This recording couples world premiere piano duet versions of two important works by William Walton with the first recording of a "student" piece by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Walton's First Symphony was composed between 1931 and 1935. Crown Imperial was written as a march for the Coronation of King George VI in 1937. Vaughan William wrote his Suite for Four Hands on one Pianoforte in 1893 under the tutelage of Sir Hubert Parry. This is not only an exceptionally "early" piece to find its way onto a recording, but also his only piece for piano duet.

Lynn Arnold is well known for her collaborative musicianship and for her commitment to advocating and performing British music. An alumna of Cambridge University where she held a celebrated Instrumental Award, Lynn won much recognition in various competitions during her subsequent study at the Royal Academy of Music. Lynn Arnold is on the staff of the Royal Academy of Music. Charles Matthews has won numerous awards, perhaps most notably first prize in the 1999 Franz Liszt Organ Interpretation Competition in Budapest. Schott Music has published a collection of his compositions for flute and piano. © Albion Records

In your panoramas...
Jordi Savall: Music, life and recording

It was a rainy October night in the Bugey. On October nights, it's always raining in the Bugey. It was around midnight. There were fifty of us, waiting in the cold, the wet and the rapt silence at the Ambronay Festival. All of a sudden, and without a sound, Jordi Savall was there, sopping wet in a white raincoat, like Bogart in Casablanca, holding onto a hard case shaped like a human body. Moving slowly, he drew out not a person but a viola de gamba, which he started tuning and stringing with the greatest care. And then the miracle descended upon the auditorium.

Radu Lupu: an Understated Genius

Radu Lupu was a poet, magician and pianist who pursued the indescribable. The Romanian artist’s musical approach was brought to life by his tormented and fiercely introverted personality, which was always shrouded in mystery. When sat at his piano, he would knead the keys like dough, seeking a powerful, consistent sound. Radu Lupu passed away on the 17th of April 2022, leaving behind a relatively small, yet incredibly valuable, discographic legacy.

François Couperin, the modern harpsichord

A favourite of Louis XIV, François Couperin (1668-1733) was the harpsichord superstar of the 18th century. At the time, the harpsichord was a prestigious instrument which was at the height of its fame (although it would return to obscurity in the following century), and Couperin revolutionised the way it was played, breaking a path that would later be trod by other virtuosos of the period like Dandrieu or Rameau. The Quebecois harpsichordist Olivier Fortin tells Qobuz the story of "Couperin the Great".
