After taking a detour into psychedelic rock and other strange diversions on the stylistically out-of-character album Let's Start Here in early 2023, Lil Yachty returns to his distinguished brand of clever, oddball trap on the five-song mini-EP The Secret Recipe. The title track is an infectious duet between Yachty and J. Cole, with both rappers shining over a hypnotic soul sample as they deliver personality-heavy verses. "Tesla" wanders through a glitchy intro and Auto-Tuned vocals before dropping a huge, infectious beat that Yachty uses as a playground for silly and subversive bars. The rest of the EP is similar, with "SOLO STEPPIN CRETE BOY" looping Aphex Twin-esque synths over booming trap hi-hats, and "Strike (Holster)" rewiring R&B elements until they conform to Yachty's weird and insistent flows.
