Given the title and look of Macy Gray's first proper album in five years, it's not surprising that The Reset faces turbulent times with an evident burning desire for a systemwide reboot. Gray and her three-member backing band started making the LP after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the murders of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd. Although she didn't stop writing love songs -- as the rustic/affectionate "Thinking of You" and dramatic/wistful "You Got Away" put across -- she packed The Reset with some of her most earnest and poignant songs. "America" ("you make cry") comes across like the result of a challenge to make a despondent and lucid Sly & the Family Stone song. She dreams of leaving the planet in "Alien," a plaintive number she begins with "What doesn't kill you makes you start drinkin'." Even an update of Body Count's thrash protest rager "Cop Killer" is low-spirited, numbed by racist tragedies. Positive-minded songs such as "Every Night" (featuring a fitting guest verse from Maino) and "The Disco Song" (an anthem with a gamboling, Sylvester-like bassline) provide some animated respite.
