This single CD reissues the two-LP set of the same name. Included are two sessions originally cut for Prestige's subsidiary Moodsville (Nice an' Cool and The Soulful Mood of Gene Ammons), which are purposely relaxed and strictly at ballad tempos. Fortunately, Ammons (who had a distinctive, huge tone) was long a master at interpreting ballads, and although these performances do not quite reach the heights of his greatest recordings, the lyrical music is quite enjoyable. Accompanied by either Richard Wyands or Patti Bown on piano, Doug Watkins or George Duvivier on bass, and J.C. Heard or Ed Shaughnessy on drums, Ammons is tasteful and creative in a subtle way throughout these successful dates.

The New British Jazz Scene in 10 Albums

Hard bop, hip hop, free jazz, groove, electro, calypso, experimental or Caribbean: the key players of the new British jazz scene are open to everything. They know their classics like the back of their hands though they certainly don’t hold back from exploring all kinds of genres, making for a wonderfully eclectic sound. Here we look back over ten essential albums.

MPS, Jazz from the Black Forest

Jazz label MPS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018. On this occasion we interviewed Andreas Brunner-Schwer, son of founder Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, about his encounters, the label's first recordings and its uniqueness.

Betty Davis, The Funk Panther

Without her, there would be no Macy Gray, Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse or Janelle Monáe! Gone to heaven, Betty Davis remains the pioneer of feline soul sisters. The funk goddess par excellence. She was also one of the leading ladies in a certain Miles Davis' life, whose wife she would be for a short time. But who really were you Betty?
