Aqua Timez had only been around for five years or so before their first massive compilation, but their success (fueled in part by having theme music included in some smash hit TV shows) has been noteworthy enough for an early retrospective, it seems. The band's characteristic delivery of high-speed half-rapped vocals, thick and sludgy guitars, and surprisingly intricate rhythm components is here throughout the long set, covering well-known pieces ("Velonica") as well as newer works ("Plumeria"). Lead vocalist Futoshi has a flat delivery for most of the proceedings, something that works well for him as a contrast to the high-energy riffs and provides a palette from which the instrumentalists can fly a little more dramatically. Big hits here include theme music from Bleach in the aforementioned "Velonica" as well as "Alones" (which includes a strange bridge of flamenco in this version), and pieces such as "Niji" from earlier in the group's career. Some of the newer pieces may be more interesting, however, as they show a deeper understanding of melody and a little bit of exploration beyond the standard pop thrash that dominates some of the earlier efforts. It may be a bit early for a greatest-hits compilation, but this one should still satisfy anyone curious about the group's full existing catalog.
