Jarrett, Peacock, DeJohnette: the three have played together so many times... But when they made Tales Of Another, Keith Jarrett's famous trio was just getting started. This was the first release from a group that was fated to go down in the annals of jazz history.  The date was the 7th of February 1977 at Generation Sound Studios in New York. Manfred Eicher aka Mr ECM was behind the console, naturally. The six pieces recorded were all written by Gary Peacock. That is what makes this superb record so wonderfully unique, this is neither Jarrett's nor Jack DeJohnette's music. There is a simplicity in the way the double bass player expresses the themes and, above all, a truly stunning sense of narrative. Tales Of Another offers an insight into the close relationship that the three men would go on to develop throughout their careers together. This is absolutely a record worth (re)discovering. © Marc Zisman / Qobuz

In your panoramas...
Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet

At the start of his busy career Keith Jarrett spent seven years carrying out all manner of crazy experiments with his American Quartet. Between the years of 1971 and 1976, the pianist, alongside Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman ran some kind of mad laboratory in which the genres of hard bop, free-jazz, world and avant-garde would all come together. A spontaneous and interesting time worth rediscovering.

Bill Evans in 10 Albums

Without him, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau and a few thousand other jazz pianists would play differently. More than forty years after his death, the legacy of Bill Evans hasn’t lost any of its influence. On the contrary, it is difficult to sort through his bottomless discography without finding even an incidental recording that doesn’t tower above 90% of the competition. Here are 10 of his albums, subjectively selected…

Bossa nova, the Eternal Wave

Since its creation in the late 1950s, Bossa-nova has become an indispensable part of Brazilian music. The style’s strong evocative power won over artists from all around the world and earned recognition for many first-rate musicians whose works are now seen as classics.
