Sony wasted no time in getting the 2022 Vienna Summer Night Concert on the streets and onto hard drives; the concert took place June 16, and the album was released July 8 and hit best-seller charts the following week. Perhaps Sony realized that the album would have what book publishers call time value, given that first-time conductor Andris Nelsons took note of current events in programming a pair of works by Ukrainian composers as well as a Tango by Arturs Maskats from his native Latvia. Nelsons actually faced a substantial challenge in programming a wartime Sommernachtskonzert without disturbing its status as a great summer escape for a hundred thousand Viennese or more, and he did his job well. The Ukrainian and Latvian pieces come toward the beginning, and they're real crowd-pleasers. Indeed, the Melody of Myroslav Skoryk might easily be incorporated more widely into concerts of this kind, but Nelsons also gives the program as a whole a slightly weightier cast than usual, with Beethoven starting off and an entire Saint-Saëns cello concerto from Gautier Capuçon. Then Nelsons turns on the gas with the more usual material, offering highly energetic La Gazza Ladra and The Bartered Bride overtures before Strauss II's Wiener Blut, Op. 354, takes its usual place at the end. Sony's engineers did well in the difficult open-air environment, and this is in many respects a keepsake Sommernachtskonzert.
