Bryan Adams has always advocated for more rock in the world, and this time he does so with the help of—would you believe it—John Cleese! The famous member of Monty Python lent his voice to the introduction of Kick Ass, one of 12 songs that feature in the Canadian’s fifteenth album. Parodying a preacher’s sermon, the comedian talks of an angel, dressed in boots and blue jeans, who was sent to earth to spread the good word of rock’n’roll. Humour and guitars go hand in hand on this record, perfectly capturing the tone of the album. The title track, So Happy It Hurts, is a tribute to spontaneity, whilst Never Gonna Rain conveys an almost divine sense of optimism. This release goes to show that Bryan Adams hasn’t strayed far from his status as the prince of happiness. The Run to You singer is still just as captivating too; Just Like Me, Just Like You and I’ve Been Looking For You pay testament to that. The track On the Road sees the 60-something reminisce about his lengthy career, recounting his 45 years of non-stop world tours. The word “Up” appears many times on the album, and this can only mean one thing: the pandemic hasn’t dampened Bryan Adams’ lust for life, and he’s keen to share his positivity with his listeners. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

Pavement's Not-So-Secret Genre-Making History

Thirty years ago, Pavement set a road map for '90s indie rock—lo-fi, whip-smart, Gen-X cynical—with their career-defining Slanted and Enchanted. (And yes, the band came to define the term "slacker rock.") You can still hear their influence on artists like Courtney Barnett, Deerhunter, Beabadoobee, Parquet Courts, Kiwi Jr., and many more. And, of course, they famously, majorly inspired Blur's 1997 self-titled album, in effect changing the face of Brit-pop without even meaning to. As Pavement continues on their first tour since 2010, here's a look back at the band's history through their epochal records.

Nick Cave: Bad Seed

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds remain one of the most prolific adventures of the post-punk era. Since the late 1980s, the vast magnetism of the Australian singer has swirled through violent paroxysms, fulminating covers, piano ballads and sweaty rock'n'roll. As the years went by, Cave became more and more of a crooner, part way between a punk Frank Sinatra and an austere Johnny Cash.

J.J. Cale: Big Brother o' Blues

More than eight years after his death, there is still no getting away from the vital wellspring of music that is the works of J.J. Cale. With his unique alloy of blues, folk, country and jazz, the man worshipped by Clapton, who lived for a while in a trailer, is still one of rock's most influential hermits.
