Despite an enduring and well-deserved popularity, Rivera has always stood slightly apart from the salsa mainstream. He was an emphatically Puerto Rican singer in an idiom still strongly Cuban, and his gravelly voice differed markedly from the high, sharp norm. But he was also dynamite, as this anthology of several years' hits makes very clear.
