In 1993, planet rap was hit by the Wu-Tang Clan meteorite, a Staten Island hip-hop gang who exposed the gritty ins and outs of life in the ghetto. “We’re a family that uses words and sounds as swords” said RZA, the DJ producer with a golden touch who fashioned the Wu-Tang sound (characterised by dark atmospheres and old soundtracks from kung fu and horror B movies). The release of their 1993 album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) saw RZA, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, GZA, Masta Killa, Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon and U-God go down in history. In 2019 the American TV network Showtime dedicated a four-part documentary series to the group: Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men. This EP features several tracks which were used as a soundtrack for the documentary with featurings from Ghostface Killah, RZA, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Cappadonna as well as Nas. Despite lacking the vigour of their golden years, the New Yorkers are still brilliant behind the mic. This 7-track record will mostly appeal to long-time fans. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
