Is there an artist better at making synths weep? Many have searched for God through their modular synthesisers, but few have reached such heights or demonstrated such ease in handling their instrument. Signed exclusively to the Erased Tapes label ever since the beginning of his career, Ryan Lee West maintains his steady pace with his third album, Now is, following Articulation in 2020 and Overflow in 2021. With Now Is, Rival Consoles opens ‘a new chapter in an ongoing quest for refinement and evolution’ (very nicely put). After the dystopian Overflow, the English producer wanted to compose a more ‘colourful and euphoric’ album. As on every record, and perhaps even more so here, Rival Consoles comfortably tucks listeners into a box padded with cotton wool and takes them on a journey. You never really know where it starts or ends, but it doesn’t matter; it’s not the kind of music you want to intellectualise… You just want to lose yourself in the majestic synth loops, contemplative melodies, ultra-fuzzy techno beats and long, ambient tracks that will send shivers down your spine. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

In your panoramas...
Erased Tapes, a Not-so-classic Label

Since its birth in 2007, Erased Tapes has made a name for itself as one of the most innovative labels of the last 15 years and enjoyed great commercial success. Although some fail to see past its neoclassical shopfront (Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds), the London-based label explores the outer limits of ambient, electronica and experimental with a catalogue that's smoothly curated by the German Robert Raths. Qobuz takes a closer look.

Nils Frahm, an Atypical Piano Master

Hailed by critics of classical music as well as amateurs of the electronic genre, Nils Frahm’s talent has brought harmony between the two worlds for the last ten years. Whether he plays on a church organ or a synthesiser fitted with effect pedals, the German pianist is always looking forward, and that’s what makes him so appealing.

Neoclassicism: The New World Between Classical Music and Electro

Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama... In recent years, these popular names have all been grouped under the vast and imprecise label "neoclassical". In truth, this "scene" looks more like a motley crew of curious artists who mix classical instruments with electronic production. Drawing influence from American minimalism, these musicians tantalise the senses and expand horizons on both sides of the musical spectrum.
