For her fifteenth album, Tori Amos has put her finger into the electrical socket of the present. With Native Invader, the American has taken a look at nature and its resilience, and ability to regenerate itself. That theme gives the singer a way into a discussion of our role in the destruction of the planet, and even of the human race itself. Politics remains close to the work of Tori Amos, who has always been enthusiastically engaged. As for the production, everything is arranged to foreground her inimitable voice, which is clearly recognisable from the first notes. When she started out in the early 1990s, her records were compared to those of the young Kate Bush and Elton John. Quickly, Tory Amos left these influences behind: they were perfectly respectable, but in some sense limited the originality of her own writing. Today, Native Invader proves yet again that hers is a unique voice that takes little heed of musical fashions and prefers to focus on the art of the perfect song. The melody is catching. And listeners will find themselves whistling the choruses all night. © CM/Qobuz

Tuareg Blues: The Rock Oasis

Since the Tuareg group Tinariwen released their first official album in 2002, entitled “The Radio Tisdas Sessions”, their electric, guitar-soaked music has become its own category of rock - one that is recognised and respected from Bamako to Los Angeles. This international success has allowed many musicians from the Sahara to get their music heard, as Western rockers continue to be drawn towards this poetic music emanating from the sand dunes and rocky expanses.

Pavement's Not-So-Secret Genre-Making History

Thirty years ago, Pavement set a road map for '90s indie rock—lo-fi, whip-smart, Gen-X cynical—with their career-defining Slanted and Enchanted. (And yes, the band came to define the term "slacker rock.") You can still hear their influence on artists like Courtney Barnett, Deerhunter, Beabadoobee, Parquet Courts, Kiwi Jr., and many more. And, of course, they famously, majorly inspired Blur's 1997 self-titled album, in effect changing the face of Brit-pop without even meaning to. As Pavement continues on their first tour since 2010, here's a look back at the band's history through their epochal records.

Jack White, The Saviour of Rock

From the White Stripes to his time in the solo wilderness, Jack White has been foretelling the doom of a clapped-out rock'n'roll. The genius with a thousand projects has a new prophecy: rock is coming back. While we await its return, here's a look back at the White phenomenon.
