André Caplet’s Épiphanie for cello and orchestra, inspired by an old Ethiopian tale, is a fascinating work of a startling modernity, perhaps the most ambitious of its composer, foreshadowing Florentz and Dutilleux. The world premiere recording, we are making available for the first time on digital platforms, was made in 1980 by a high-level team (Frédéric Lodéon at the cello, Charles Dutoit conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra) rewarded with numerous prizes for this ambitious album, also including Lalo’s concerto. © Warner Classics
