A newcomer to the realm of violin virtuosos, Sebastian Bohren was born in Switzerland in 1987. He attended the Zurich University of the Arts where he received a solid education and learnt from talented musicians, such as Robert Zimansky and Zakhar Bron. As a member of the Stradivari Quartet between 2013 and 2020, Sebastian plays the “King George” violin on this recording, a 1710 Stradivarius on loan from a Swiss foundation (which also owns two violins, two violas and two cellos by the famous Cremona violin maker).

Forming the middle ground between a classic recital and something more contemporary, this album features arrangements from works spanning another era, for example: works by Kreisler (who was a pop artist before his time); Vitali’s Chaconne; Maria Theresia von Paradis’ Sicilienne; two violin sonatas by Tartini and Corelli’s famous Folia. Each has been peppered with romantic arrangements for both solo violin and strings.

This programme was born out of Sebastian Bohren’s love and admiration for Polish violinist Ida Handel (1928-2020) and the instrumentalists of the past who boldly favoured transcriptions of baroque pieces during a time when musicological diktats didn’t exist. This deeply personal rendition defies expectations as it lends itself to the romantic side of the instrument. © François Hudry/Qobuz
