Few of the huge names in American rap stand the test of time. Nas, however, is a rare commodity. Since starting his King’s Disease album series, this rap veteran has totally come to life. The third album in the series, Kings Disease III, is—like its two predecessors—conceived in close collaboration with producer Hit-Boy. This release is choral, multi-layered and introduces acoustic sounds whilst maintaining an old-school aesthetic. This balance is perfectly illustrated on the track ‘Legit’, where Nas questions the notion of legitimacy… Not even legends can rest on their past laurels. To remain legitimate, the rapper works hard, varying the rhythm of his flows and even introducing the gong bass drum on ‘30’, which is a tribute to the previous architects of Nas’ albums: DJ Premier and Pete Rock. The groove is heavy on ‘Recession Proof’, soft on ‘Reminisce’, disturbing on the political ‘Don’t Shoot’ and liberating and jazzy on ‘Get Light’. As always, Hit-Boy shines bright without ever encroaching on the rapper. That’s true precision. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
