Honey Harper released his first four-track record, Universal Country, in 2017. Three years later, his debut album, Starmaker, confirmed the approach he was adopting: making country music for people who don’t necessarily listen to it. The idea was to deterritorialise the country genre by mixing up characteristics and references, severing it from its rural roots and helping it evolve and grow in the studio. After growing up in the southern United States as William Fussell (Honey Harper is a stage name made up of his grandmothers’ names), he later moved to Canada, then London, with stints in France to produce his songs with Sébastien Tellier. For this second album, Honey Harper aims for something simpler: to make country music accessible to everyone. It might not be revolutionary, but it’s an undeniable success. Recorded in Los Angeles, the album is the logical continuation of his previous release. With country at its core, faux cowboy Honey Harper adds soaring arrangements, pop romanticism and nightmarish atmospheres to the mix, creating music that seems to have more in common with the Milky Way than the plains of Texas. There’s nothing that new here, but the band demonstrates a scientific understanding of sound design, creating shifting musical landscapes that move away from standard country music. This is a cosmic album that will have you feeling weightless. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
