With his second solo album released in November 1982, the former Genesis drummer/singer eyes a slightly more pop sound, which leans ever so wonderfully into Soul and R&B. We thus find in the heart of this Hello, I Must Be Going, a great cover of You Can't Hurry Love by Diana Ross' The Supremes, a single which would go on to top the British charts with near ease. This album, brilliantly produced by Phil Collins himself, (the 100% 80s sound ages rather well, and with the album finally remastered in 24-Bit Hi-Res, it really comes alive) is most remarkable for Collins' unique vocals combined with the unerring ability to sign off hit songs where rhythm is always at the heart. For a drummer, perhaps its not that surprising ... © CM/Qobuz

Prog Rock in 10 Albums

Influence is a shapeless thing, moving and rearranging based on sounds from the past and how they align with sounds from the present. In the case of progressive rock, a genre relocated from the pop charts to sheet music stands and art rock-favored stereos over the past four decades, influence has shifted in a similar way—later records that expanded the lexicon have lapped previous records with the incorporation of new styles, cultures and their corresponding sounds. Prog may not be burning up the rock charts, but you can see the everlasting influence of the genre in bands ranging from Tool to Kanye West and beyond. With that said, here are ten crucial progressive rock releases for 2021 and beyond.

Tropicália: the Story of a Brazilian Revolution

In the late 1960s, a group of young Brazilian artists rose up against the ruling military junta by fusing local popular music, rock and avant-garde. Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes and their friends invented tropicália, one of the most original musical adventures of the 20th century.

Grunge in 10 Albums

Around thirty years ago, Seattle became the epicenter of the rock scene, largely thanks to grunge music. The grungy, ‘I don’t care’ attitude rose from the ashes of punk, heavy metal and alt-rock, and instantaneously went from an underground movement to a worldwide success. Perhaps too quickly embraced by the very system it rebuffed, it almost became a caricature of itself by the end of the 1990s. Let’s look back at ten albums that defined the genre.
