"Memories" is not an exact word for the contents of Handel's 12 Grand Concertos, Op. 6. These are Italian-style concerti grossi, perhaps written to pay tribute to Arcangelo Corelli's set of 25 years before, and it's true that much of the music was borrowed from Handel's own earlier works or adapted from pieces by other composers. But the result was an up-to-the-minute and very attractive mixture of elements that was a hit with contemporary London audiences. Conductor Eduardo López Banzo, who wrote his own eccentric but informative annotations for the CD release, uses the felicitous term "musical anecdotes" to describe Handel's borrowings. He points to such items as the "Mussette" from the sixth concerto (CD 1, track 13), the tune of which came to Handel probably from folk sources via Telemann. From this background material Handel made something completely new, with rich, unusual sound effects in the strings. Banzo's group Al Ayre Español, which does not at all restrict itself to Spanish music, catches this kind of unusual moment quite vividly. It's a specialist group of the best kind, the kind that aims at general audiences and puts across fairly arcane material by dint of sheer musicality. An ideal choice for those who want to get deeper into how Handel's London audiences heard his music.
