Handel's sonatas for violin and harpsichord are under-represented on recordings, partly because they are editorially troublesome, with inaccurate attributions plaguing them from Handel's time down to our own. Violinist Bojan Čičić does well to restrict the group of sonatas to seven, filling the album out with some rare single movements from larger works. The sonatas are comparatively conservative works, mostly in the slow-fast-slow-fast pattern from the early 18th century, but they are nonetheless pure Handel, with the composer's characteristic way of expanding on a central chunk of chords, and listeners who don't know them will find them delightful. Violinist Čičić has been a stalwart of the early music scene with his Illyria Consort and with various London groups, and he is in fine form here with a rather dry Handel style that generally avoids both vibrato and tempo variations. The standout here, however, is harpsichordist Steven Devine, who plays (and tunes -- it would have been good to hear more about this) a superb harpsichord by the London builder Jacob Kirkman from the last years of Handel's life. It is a powerful instrument that stands up well to Čičić's brilliant playing, and it is capable of a highly expressive range of sounds and textures. Sample the slow movements, notably the Adagio of the Violin Sonata in G major, HWV 358. Keyboard buffs may well want the album for these magisterial harpsichord performances alone, but it is enjoyable Handel for anyone despite rather brittle and unidiomatic church sound. This release made classical best-seller charts in early 2024.
