The choice of "Get Free" as the lead-off single in the U.S. for the Vines' debut album, Highly Evolved, was a slightly strange one. Neither as catchy and melodic nor fiercely kinetic as some of the album's other songs, "Get Free" does bear the most resemblance to Nirvana's insinuating, self-deprecating singles, hoisting snarled barbs like "She never loved me/Why should anyone?" upon equally cruel guitars. However, the song follows in Nirvana's footsteps so closely that it makes the Vines look more like a tribute act than the surprisingly literate band that Highly Evolved reveals them to be. Still, "Get Free" is loud and immediate, which may make it a better introduction to the Vines for American audiences than some of their debut album's more delicately crafted moments.
