This release landed on classical best-seller lists in the summer of 2023, and that may have seemed a surprise. It offers music from a composer, unknown at least outside Sweden, and it is on a specialist label, CPO, whose catalog rarely appears there. The reason is that it is an absolute delight. The music of Gunnar de Frumerie (1908-1987) is tonal, with a variety of influences. Despite the presence of the obligatory midsummer scene in the graphics, there is nothing really Scandinavian about it. There are hints of the English pastoralists (the strong sales may come from its appeal to lovers of that style), of Respighi in the neo-Renaissance Suite for small orchestra, Op. 5b, also known as the Suite im alten Stil, and of Shostakovich in the delightful Piano Concertino, Op. 78. This work is the equal of Shostakovich's ebullient Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major, Op. 102 (which it succeeded by three years), and any pianist in search of a crowd-pleaser could perform it with good results. Yet the music here does not come off as stylistic pastiche, and there is a characteristic deep lyricism. Sample the Andante tranquillo second movement of the Musica per nove, Op. 75, a nonet. This work includes a piano, de Frumerie's own instrument, and it makes one want to hear more of his music for solo piano, said to be the most popular part of his output in Sweden. The Münchener Rundfunkorchester under Ivan Repušić, breaking down into smaller groups, delivers technically solid, fresh readings. A real find in the 20th century music realm.
