Yes, Benny the Butcher is an excellent rapper. And like all excellent rappers, he attracts and surrounds himself with other talented people. For his fourth official album, the Buffalo native summons The Alchemist and Hit-Boy to the beat making, the best (or almost the best) in the modern rap game, based on samples and a harsh, direct flow. Everybody Can’t Go is endowed with a straightforward, unrestricted writing style, putting the lyrics and message front and centre on nearly every track. Benny is as at ease with productions featuring harmonic elements played in reverse (a classic technique) as he is with pitchy soul, like on the title track featuring singer Kyle Banks, or the social storytelling of “TMVTL”, an exercise considered nearly extinct, which he skillfully revives here. It’s a collective album, where the guests pour in: Snoop Dogg, who recalls his first misdeeds in money and menace on “Back Again”, the expert tag team Jadakiss and Babyface Ray placing themselves over TR-808 cowbells on “Pillow Talk & Slander”, and rapper Armani Caesar, close relative of the Griselda collective that the album’s protagonist comes from, on “Buffalo Kitchen Club”, one of the project’s highlights. Benny The Butcher is sure of his skills and of his propensity to bring things and people together. Although he doesn’t reinvent the genre or his discography, he presents Everybody Can’t Go as proof of his mastery. For some, rap comes naturally – it’s as simple as that. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
