The idea of a musical project blending jazz instruments with a traditional symphonic orchestra is not a new one. Although, when it has happened, it’s very rarely yielded commercial success. While some may argue that underdeveloped orchestral scores have been to blame for the poor historical performance of these crossover projects – here, there’s a very different story to be told. The album, produced by electronic music mastermind Jan Bang, sees Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær band together with other leading contemporary musicians (Jan Martin Smordal and Jon Oyvind Ness on two tracks each, Rolf Wallin and Eivind Buene) for a rearrangement of six key tracks from his career. He is also accompanied by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, under the direction of Ingar Bergby.

Molvær is joined by drummer Peter Baden ("Simply So"), percussionist Adam Rudolph ("On Stream"), and some talented sound designers (Kristian Isachsen, Even Sigurdsen Rosstad), whose expertise undeniably brings a richness to the album’s soundscapes. Molvær threads lyrical, minimalist trumpet melodies – evocative performances that demonstrate real linguistic sophistication – into soft, dreamlike atmospheres, while avoiding the overwhelming dynamic effects often heard in an orchestral mass, which sits in line with the reassuring academicism of neo-classicism. The organic way Molvær's interventions blend with the orchestral colours and textures works to erase the boundaries between the improvised and written parts. In doing so he creates a model of refinement that places this project in the upper echelons of its kind. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
