Six-song EP Back on My Baby Jesus Sh!t Again is technically the 2021 follow-up to DaBaby's 2017 mixtape Back on My Baby Jesus Sh!t, but instead of continuing themes or ideas from its predecessor, it mostly indicates just how much the rapper has progressed in four short years. While DaBaby was largely discovering his style with his early releases, that style has since sharpened into a formula of immediate and aggressive bars and the effortless incorporation of pop hooks in songs that fly by before listeners know what hit them. That formula is on full display with Back on My Baby Jesus Sh!t Again, with DaBaby ripping through six songs in just over 12 minutes so ferociously it's unclear if he ever pauses to take a breath. Approaches to both rap delivery and instrumental backing change gears quickly, with the coy and bouncy "5 FOR A DUB" melting quickly into the slithery trap of the Kodak Black-assisted "LEVELS" and then taking another left turn into the acoustic guitar loops and blistering flows of "LOOK LIKE SUMN." "ROOF" is the kind of puffed-up confidence in musical form that makes DaBaby such a captivating performer, and this approach quickly changes again for a moody instrumental and 21 Savage cameo on closing track "STICKED UP." Though it's over almost as quickly as it begins, Back on My Baby Jesus Sh!t Again perfectly captures all of the components of DaBaby's secrets of success; direct lyrical assaults that waste no time charging out of the gates, songs that balance sticky hooks with surges of rap power, and flows that change before they have a chance to sink in, let alone grow stale. The EP's six songs are some of the best examples of DaBaby firing at full force, and the way they zoom by makes for a less-exhausting listening experience than trying to keep up with the gale force energy of one of his full-length releases.
