Auri is a new trio initiated by two eminent members of Nightwish, multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley and Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards), as well as Johanna Kurkela, the wife of the latter and a singer with a strong reputation in Finland (her fourth album Hyvästi, Dolores Haze topped the charts in 2010). In essence however, they are much closer to Holopainen’s solo project, Music Inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge (after Keno Don Rosa’s The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck), than the renowned symphonic metal band. Released in 2014, the album already featured the three protagonists around an orchestral music mostly dominated by traditional Celtic influences. This approach can be likened to those of Mike Oldfield (in his Crises days), Clannad or more recently Blackmore’s Night, in the sense that it isn’t restricted to purists, favouring a more pop-writing style and neat folk-rock arrangements. Without going as far as The Corrs’ tantalising excesses, Kurkela’s singing glorifies the final product, approaching the likes of Sinéad O’ Connor (Night 13, Underthing Solstice), Maggie Reilly (See), Enya (The Space Between), Lisa Gerrard (The Name of the Wind) or Loreena McKennitt (I Hope Your World Is Kind). The result couldn’t be further removed from metal, as the classy production oscillates between classic progressive rock and modern forms of ambient music (chill-out or psybient), and even the aesthetics and eclecticism of the legendary Dead Can Dance... Auri can just as well be heard in massage salons as on the soundtrack of some video games, as game designers are often fond of scores that blend music from the middle ages (and beyond) with film soundtrack orchestrations, sprinkled with a touch of electro. © Jean-Pierre Sabouret/Qobuz
