A meeting with the Londoner, who has just released her second album, Blood; a beautiful melding of soul, folk, and deliciously sensual pop...

His. Hers. Blood. Lianne La Havas has baptised her second album thus. The record dwells on the artist’s rich heritage; she is descended from Greece (on her father’s side) and Jamaica (on her mother’s), the product of the meeting of two musicians, in London, some 26 years ago. Listening to Blood, it becomes apparent that this is La Havas operating at the peak of her powers. The album makes the case for her entry into the legendary pantheon of soul, alongside the likes of Sade, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, Esperanza Spalding, and many others... But Lianne La Havas does more than just offer cosy, sensual grooves. On Is Your Love Big Enough ?, released in 2012, we found out that she was capable of mixing the respective idioms of folk, pop, jazz, and rock. Before upping the ante on her newest record, she met Prince; the pop-genius inviting her to his lair in Paisley Park, Minneapolis. She also took a few memorable, album-forming trips to Jamaica, where much of her family still lives. The trips were not initially intended to be in search of artistic interpretation, but they ended up as such… And the result of this singular journey, and that princely meeting, for this truly modern soul-sister, is her stunning new album. Blood.
