It was in his teens that Colin Currie, then an apprentice percussionist, discovered the music of Steve Reich. It was a shock for the young Scottish musician who, in the space of twenty years, has become one of the most eminent ambassadors of the minimalist composer’s work. Described by Reich himself as “one of the finest musicians in the world today”, Colin Currie is an ardent defender of contemporary repertoire, and a particularly appreciated interpreter of today’s greatest composers, including Steve Reich of course, but also Danny Elfman, Kalevi Aho, Bruno Mantovani and Einojuhani Rautavaara (to date, he has created over forty works).
Equally at home as a soloist or as part of an ensemble, Colin Currie is a visionary and all-round artist, renowned for his highly physical and powerful performances. Since 2018, his critically acclaimed recordings - his recording of Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto won the Grammy Award for best performance of a contemporary work - have resonataed particularly on his label, Colin Currie Records, which records the work of the two groups he founded: the Colin Currie Group and the Colin Currie Quartet.
