Lady Saw
Jamaican vocalist Minister Marion Hall is best known for the many years she operated under the name Lady Saw and was known as the First Lady of Dancehall. As Lady Saw, Hall's larger-than-life confidence and lascivious lyricism scored her many hits, including some of her best-known singles, like her 1996 safe-sex anthem "Condom" or 2004's "I've Got Your Man." Hall retired the Lady Saw moniker when she converted to Christianity in the mid-2010s, but she continued making music, shifting to a religious focus on gospel albums such as 2018's His Grace.Born in 1969 in the small Jamaican village of St. Mary's, Hall signed to the Jamaican grassroots label VP Records and debuted in 1994 with Lover Girl. Lady Saw steadily released multiple songs and albums to increasing fanfare, teaming up with Shabba Ranks on the 1996 single "Want It Tonight." Her second album, Give Me the Reason, was followed by 1997's Passion, which featured her X-rated vocal swaggering on duets with Shaggy ("Mr. Lover Lover") and Beenie Man ("Healing"). The album was her most popular up until that point, prompting the 1998 release of two greatest-hits packages, Collection and Raw: The Best of Lady Saw. She continued evolving as she entered the 2000s. In 2002, she contributed a guest verse to No Doubt's massive hit "Underneath It All," which eventually won her a Grammy. She incorporated hip-hop elements into her 2004 album Strip Tease, then three years later released the ambitious Walk Out. In 2010, she formed her own label, Diva's Records, which released her album My Way that same year. In late 2015, Hall was baptized and converted to Christianity. Soon after, she transitioned from dancehall to gospel, dropping the Lady Saw name and performing now as Minister Marion Hall or Marion Hall. With this new identity, Hall released several gospel songs and devotional albums, including 2016's When God Speaks and 2018's His Grace.
