Florian Krumpock
Florian Krumpöck has achieved prominence as both a pianist and a conductor. His recorded repertory leans toward German and Austrian repertory from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Krumpöck was born in Vienna in 1978. His mother, Ilse Krumpöck, was a writer and art historian; his father was a cellist. Krumpöck benefited from instruction by some of the top pianists in the world, including Gerhard Oppitz, Rudolf Buchbinder, Elisabeth Leonskaja, and Daniel Barenboim, whom he considered a mentor and who influenced his eventual turn toward conducting. An early backer was actor and classical music entrepreneur Peter Ustinov; it was after a performance arranged by Ustinov that Krumpöck came to Barenboim's attention. Krumpöck made his debut at the Tonhalle Zurich with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, and that attracted the attention of bookers in other major classical music centers, including Salzburg, Munich, and Moscow. His solo debut at the Konzerthaus in Viennas was praised by the local daily Die Presse, which enthused "Forget Lang Lang and Arcadi Volodos. There are also highly virtuoso keyboard tigers in Austria." The pianist's 2002 debut recording, Portrait Florian Krumpöck: Music by Franz Liszt, emphasized virtuoso repertory.
Krumpöck's repertory as a pianist focuses on repertory from the German-speaking sphere, both traditional 19th century pieces and more modern works. He played two complete cycles of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas at the Musikverein in Vienna and also performed Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier in complete readings. Krumpöck has appeared at the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg, and the large hall of the Moscow Conservatory, among other major venues. In the mid-2000s decade, with encouragement from Barenboim, he turned to conducting and began to find engagements after stepping in as a last-minute substitute with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in 2006.
Krumpöck held various regular conducting posts, including those at Austria's Beethoven Philharmonie from 2006 to 2010 and the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock from 2011 to 2014. Since 2015, he has been general manager of the Kultur.Sommer.Semmering festival. Since then, he has preferred to work as a freelancer and has guest-conducted top orchestras in many countries, including the Bruckner Orchester Linz, the Vienna Symphony, and the Gulbenkian Orchestra of Lisbon, as well as a production at the Royal Opera of Copenhagen. On recordings, Krumpöck has been heard mostly as a pianist, but he did conduct the Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra in the Symphonisches Tongemälde, Op. 10 ("Wallenstein") of Josef Rheinberger on a 2019 release on the Ars Produktion label. In 2023, as a pianist, Krumpöck released a pair of albums featuring Chopin's works on the Sony Classical label.
