Evie Tamala
Born Cucu Suryaningsih on June 23, 1969, in Tasikmalaya, West Java, the Indonesian singer-songwriter known as Evie Tamala has been a popular voice on the country's dangdut scene since beginning her career in the late '80s. The oldest child of six siblings, she cut her teeth as a stage singer in Malay orchestra group Sinar Remaja and after a slow start, found fame with her third album Dokter Cinta ("Doctor of Love") in 1989, which propelled her to the forefront of dangdut; a prominent genre of Indonesian folk that combines Hindustani and Malaysian music with western rock. She carried the success over to her subsequent albums, including 1990's Hari-Hari Cinta ("Days of Love" in 1990), 1991's Aduh Sayang ("Oh Baby"), and more. She went on to release a string of solo albums during the '00s, including Indahnya and Asmara in 2006, also amassing a cache of singles and EPs including 2022's "Keramat."
