Atos Trio
The ATOS Trio, in the words of the players, "strives to convey the spirit of string quartet playing to the piano trio realm." The group's programming and recordings have mixed standard trio repertory with national themes.
The ATOS Trio was formed in Germany in 2003 by violinist Annette von Hehn, pianist Thomas Hoppe, and cellist Stefan Heinemeyer, taking its name from the initial sounds of the first names of its members. The trio's membership has remained stable. In the late 2000s decade and early 2010s, the ATOS Trio scored several major achievements that propelled their career to the top level. Those included, in 2007, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award, which brought the group a tour of 20 U.S. concert venues and exposure to regional U.S. classical critics such as that of the Detroit Free Press; that writer praised in their performance "the kind of pitch-perfect unanimity of phrasing, tone, feeling, and interpretation that distinguishes the finest chamber ensembles." The year 2007 also brought the ATOS Trio a sweep of first prizes at the quadrennial Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, a first in the competition's history. In 2009, the ATOS Trio was named BBC 3 New Generation Artists, which brought wide exposure in British concerts and broadcasting. The group has performed at top world venues, including Wigmore Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Back home in Germany, they have been particular favorites on the summer festival circuit, performing at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Rheingau Music Festival, among others, as well as at such events as the Budapest Spring abroad. The ATOS Trio has recorded for various labels, including Farao Classics, CPO, and Wigmore Hall Live; on the latter label, they issued a pair of albums containing Beethoven's complete piano trios in 2019.
